Mount Rushmore.
July 2011.
We arrive in South Dakota, where the movie "Dances With Wolves" has been filmed.
Like almost everywhere in the United States, you must be 21 to buy alcohol.
While it is possible to drive at 14 and buy a gun at 18!
Enguerrand becomes in charge of sawing the wood.
He cuts down a tree in less than 10 minutes.
While the girls dress up Beatrix as a Hindu princess with three scarves and a cloth,
boys train at the lasso.
Lets be honest, it is less dangerous to catch one an other.
We find Mount Rushmore in bright sunshine.
On the parking lot, a man asks: "Can I take your picture?".
The heads of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln
were carved in this beautiful granite mountain between 1928 to 1941.
The aim was to attract tourists in the region.
With over three million visitors a year, it is a success!
But our Agathe seems to prefer the adventures of Cherry Ames to the details of this artistic prowess!
During a lunch break on a beautiful lawn, the children enjoy themselves, and everything ends up with a lot of fun.
On the parking lot of a McDonalds, we meet a family of Austrians traveling with a small army truck.
Clement, Anna and their two children are on their way to Buenos Aires.
We spend the evening together, and we are joined by Roger, our neighbor.
We go to bed a little late ...
Have a good trip to the south, and keep us posted.
We attend Sunday Mass in the Cathedral of Rapid City.
The building is not really what we expect as a cathedral, but the parish is very dynamic.
And the last monument on our way: The Devil Tower.
This strange rock formed in the chimney of a volcano.
An Indian legend tells that the claws of a bear are at the origin of these grooves in the rock.
This mountain is also a sacred place for Indians.
We even see an Indian family chanting at the foot of a tree covered with fabric.
We enter North Dakota, and all we see from the legend, are the vast fields of cereal.
Not knowing what we will find in Canada, we do a final laundry.
Enguerrand is an efficient assistant.
We spent two unforgettable months in the United States enjoying a bright sunshine.
From the deserts of Arizona to the great prairies of Wyoming through the parks in California and Utah,
this country really impressed us by its diversity, and by the kindness of its inhabitants.
Farewell US.
